MovieLens Browser Requirements

In order to provide users with a compelling movie recommender experience MovieLens now requires browsers that support HTML 4.01, CSS 1 and JavaScript.

Supported browsers include:
  • Internet Explorer 5.5, and later, for Windows
  • Firefox 0.8, and later, for all platforms
  • Safari for the Macintosh
  • Netscape 6, and later, for Windows and Macintosh
  • Mozilla 1.0, and later, for all platforms
  • Opera 6.x and later, for all platforms
Netscape 4.x is no longer supported and its use may provide for a suboptimal MovieLens experience.

Internet Explorer is no longer supported on the Macintosh and its use may provide for a suboptimal MovieLens experience. For Macintosh users still using Internet Explorer, your options are:
  • Latest Mac OS X users (10.3 and later): Safari.
  • Older Mac OS X users (10.0, 10.1, 10.2): Firefox 1.0 and later, Netscape 6 and later, or Mozilla 1.0 and later
  • Mac OS X users (10.1+): Camino 0.8 and later. This browser may run faster on old macs.
  • Older Mac OS 9 users: Netscape 6 or 7 (nothing later, nothing by Mozilla).

MovieLens JavaScript Requirements

MovieLens requires JavaScript. Here are instructions for enabling JavaScript on most browsers.

Netscape/Mozilla users also need to allow scripts to change images. Follow the instructions for enabling JavaScript at the link above, making sure Change images is also checked.

When you rate a movie, the stars for that movie should change from red (MovieLens' prediction) to blue (your rating). If the stars don't turn blue, you need to enable change images. If you've followed the instructions above and are still having problems, send e-mail to ml-problems@cs.umn.edu.

We promise to never generate any of those annoying pop-under windows. We hate them too.
